Local elections set for May 1

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) – Voters will head to the polls in several Hampton Roads cities next week.

Norfolk, Chesapeake, Newport News and Hampton are holding elections Tuesday, May 1.

The field of candidates is crowded in Norfolk with nearly two dozen running for seats on the ciy council and school board.

Incumbent Councilmen Tommy Smiegel, Martin Thomas and Paul Riddick are running unopposed. There are several candidates running for seats in Wards Two and Three.

Chesapeake will elect a new mayor. Current mayor Richard West took over when Alan Krasnoff resigned in November. He is facing local real estate agent Jo Anne Gallant.

Voters will also choose city council and school board members in Chesapeake.

Newport News meanwhile will also elect a mayor. Four candidates are running: Marcellus Harris III, McKinley Price (Incumbent), Dominique (Dom) Green and Santiel Creekmore.

Hampton voters will also elect city council and school board members.
